PPC (or Pay Per Click) campaigns involve paying search engines for sponsored advertising positions alongside the top organic results.

For each position, you make a bid that you are willing to pay (in terms of a daily or monthly advertising budget) to the search engine advertising program (ie Google Adwords). Once your ad is visible, you then pay Google (or Yahoo, or Bing, or whoever…) a fee for every user that clicks on your ad and visits your site.

The fee you pay depends on the popularity of the keyword and the corresponding budget you need to have for particular keywords can (and does) vary tremendously. It is very easy to spend over £1000 a day on some of the most popular search phrases – however the subsequent hike in visitor number makes this a viable option for larger businesses.

Do not be alarmed however, these are extreme cases and in many instances, Pay Per Click advertising offers you an excellent way to break into the top rankings with a relatively modest advertising spend.
